What is PoE? The new concept of “real” PoE extender over coax cable

     

     

  Enconn’s PoE (Power over Ethernet) extender over coax cable is a novel PoE technology. It is the first “true” PoE extender in the world and is not “repeater” type of “extender”. This means there is no device but cable between PSE (power sourcing equipment, PoE term) and PD (power device, PoE term). The obvious advantages of this novel technology are power saving due to no “repeater” consuming power in the middle of cable and increasing current loading and cable power dissipation, and the feasibility of high output power >30W at PD equipment over 300m distance.

 

  Before understanding why PoE extender over coax technology can bring great benefit to IP surveillance systems, we need to review some background information of PoE. What is PoE? Just like the name described, it is a technology to let Ethernet network carrying data and electrical power to Ethernet device. In 2003, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) provides the PoE standard of 802.3af which define the power specification of 15.4W and voltage ranging from 44 to 57Vdc. In addition, IEEE ratified another high power version in 2009 as 802.3at which provides 25.5W and voltage from 50 to 57 Vdc. These two standards let PoE applications becoming popular and promising. The PoE applications include security and access control such as PoE network camera, IP telephone, wireless LAN access point, RF ID reader, computing and where Ethernet device has been applied. The one that provides power is called PSE. Most PSE capability is built in switch or router. Sometimes, a PoE injector will be used as PSE when applied on non-PoE switch to provide PoE source function. The Ethernet device that uses PSE to power is called PD equipment.

 

  What are the benefits when PoE extender over coax technology is applied on IP camera network?

1.      To enlarge the PoE coverage from 100m to 300m and bring more freedom of set point in layout network.

2.      Higher power throughput available at IP network camera side.

 Currently, to provide 30W at 300m distance will need installer to deploy extra power line. However, by using Enconn’s PoE extender over coax technology, installer can still use PoE way to feed high power consumption equipment at 300m distance. This capability of high power by using Enconn’s PoE extender over coax products allows installers to deploy more power dissipated devices combined with IP camera such as thermal heater equipment, PZT motor platform and night light lamp through PoE technology.

3.      To make outdoor IP camera installation becoming very easy.

 No PoE repeater in the middle of cable can make IP camera outdoor installation easily. Installers don’t need to find a location to set up repeaters with outdoor enclosure. Enconn’s “true” PoE extender can remove the need to put “repeater” in the middle of cable. Installers just directly connect Enconn’s PoE transmitter and receiver by coax cable from end to end. PoE transmitter is connected to PoE switch or PoE injector combined with non-PoE switch when high power throughput or standalone needed. PoE receiver is connected to IP camera. Then installer has finished the installation of Enconn’s PoE extender over coax cable.

4.      To bring simple, reliable and robust PoE link to IP camera network.

 Just as we described in Enconn’s Ethernet over Coax products, coax cable can provide a reliable and robust link even in outdoor environment. Enconn’s PoE over coax cable products can let user to have video surveillance through a simple, reliable and robust PoE over coax cable link.

5. Low maintenance cost of network

 Enconn’s PoE extender over coax technology allows IP surveillance to be able to use PoE technology up to 300m and high power throughput of >30W at PD equipment. The concept of simple PoE connection is kept in Enconn’s PoE extender over coax technology. This will let the advantage of low maintenance cost of PoE network to extend into longer distance and higher power consumption areas.
